I build sites around what a person needs to understand, in the order they need to understand it. Structure first. Everything after that is easier, and better.
Web design is the order information arrives in, the weight given to each part, and what a person can do next. Those decisions come before a colour is chosen, and everything after inherits them. Get them right and the site holds up anywhere — a fast desktop, a five-year-old Android in a car park, a screen reader.
I care about this because clarity is a kindness. Someone landing on a page is usually busy, distracted, and looking for one thing. Designing well means respecting that: showing them what matters, in the right order, and making the next step obvious. It's a standard you can check rather than argue about, which is why I hold to it.
